Choosing a terminal is a question about the site, not the device

Terminal specifications resemble one another and comparing them on a list leads nowhere. The useful question is different: where does the device stand at the moment the customer pays.

If it sits at a till and does not move, take a countertop with a wired connection and a printer. No battery to watch, a stable connection and the lowest price.

If it travels to the table, the customer or the car, you need a mobile unit with a battery and SIM. Here the specification that matters is battery life against shift length, not screen resolution.

If you sell from a stand, at a fair or on delivery, a compact model with a built-in SIM does the job and needs no infrastructure at all.

If the site runs without staff, a car park, car wash or vending machine, you need an unattended device in a rugged housing. There, durability is the whole specification.

What arrives configured and what does not

The device arrives set up for your account. Switch it on, log in with a PIN and take the first transaction. No engineer, no phone setup, no waiting for activation.

Configured in advance: the link to your account, the accepted methods, contactless, the language and the receipt. If you said you want tips or bill splitting, those are on too.

Configured afterwards, remotely: tip percentages, receipt wording, refund behaviour, integration with till software. Changes are pushed from a distance, with no devices to send back.

One thing does not arrive ready: connectivity on site. The Wi-Fi password or the presence of mobile coverage is the only thing that has to be in place on your side.

Rent or buy

The two models suit different cases, and the decision is at least as much an accounting one as a technical one.

Renting is a predictable monthly cost, includes maintenance and replacement on failure, and suits seasonal businesses or anyone avoiding capital expenditure. If the device turns out to be the wrong model, changing it is easier.

Buying works out cheaper over time under constant use and is sensible when the site is stable and you know exactly what you need.

There is a mixed approach that is often the most practical: buy devices for the permanent sites and rent extras for peak seasons, rather than paying all year for December.

How many devices you actually need

The number is set by the peak hour, not the average day, and that is the most common mistake on a first order.

In a shop the rule is one device per till active at peak. One shared between two tills creates exactly the queue you are trying to avoid.

In a restaurant it is roughly one mobile unit per two servers at peak, plus a countertop at the bar if turnover there is fast.

In a workshop or salon one is usually enough, unless payment happens in two different places.

Peak days, Black Friday and the Christmas period, are planned separately and in advance. Extra devices are ordered in the autumn, not in the final week.

What to know before ordering

Six questions whose answers determine which model and how many.

  • Where the device stands when the customer pays
  • Whether there is Wi-Fi on site or a SIM is needed
  • How long the shift runs and whether the battery lasts
  • Whether a printer is needed or receipts go by email
  • Whether there is till software to connect to
  • How many tills run at once at peak

Questions about this

How quickly does the device arrive?

Within 3 business days anywhere in the country once the account is approved. It arrives configured, so activation takes minutes.

Does it work without internet?

Briefly and with limits. Authorisation needs a connection. Models with a SIM fall back to mobile data when Wi-Fi drops, which in practice covers most situations.

Does it connect to my till software?

Most common systems either integrate or push the amount automatically from the till. Tell us which one you run and we will confirm before you order.

Can I get reporting per location?

Yes. Every device and every site has an identifier. Settlement can be combined or split per site, depending on how you run the business.

What happens if a device fails?

On a rental, replacement is included. On a purchase the manufacturer's warranty applies and we arrange the swap, so you are never left unable to take payments.

Ready to start accepting payments?

Send us an enquiry and you will get a concrete quote with calculated fees for your business, usually within one business day.
